１６章　　済　

1.　さて、安息日が終わると、マグダラのマリヤとヨセの母マリヤと、サロメとヤコブの母マリヤとは、香料を持ってきた。彼らがイエスの（彼の）所に来て、彼に塗るためであった。
2.　週の初めの日の、朝の非常に早いころ、彼らが墓に来ると、太陽が昇って来た。く
3.　そして、彼らは互いに言った。「だれが、私たちのために墓の入り口から岩を転がしてくれるでしょう？」
4.　しかし、彼らが見上げると、彼らはその岩が転がしてあるのを見た。――それは、非常に大きなものであった。
5.　そして、墓に入ってみると、彼らは、白くて長い着物を着た一人の若者が右側に座っているのが見えたので彼らはぎょっとした。
6.　しかし、彼は彼らに言った。「驚かないように。あなたたちは十字架につけられた、ナザレのイエスをお探しなのでしょう。彼はよみがえられています！彼はここにはおられません。見なさい。彼らがぜひ彼を置いた場所を。

10.　彼女は行って、彼と一緒にいた人々に語った。彼らは悲しんで泣いているところであった。
11.　そして、彼らは彼が生きていて、彼女に目撃されたということを聞いても彼らは信じなかった。
12.　その後、彼は彼らの内の二人に、彼らが歩いて郊外に出て行くときに、違ったお姿でお現わしになった。
13.　そこで、彼らは行って残りの者たちにその事を語った。しかし、彼らもまた信じなかった。

16 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.
2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
 3 And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”
 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large.
5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.
 7 But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.”
8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.
11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country.
13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
The Great Commission
14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Christ Ascends to God’s Right Hand
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

７章　　済

1.　その時、ファリサイ派の人々と、数人の律法学者たちが、エルサレムから来て、彼の所に集まって来た。
2.　さて、彼らは彼の弟子達の数人が汚れた手、すなわち、洗っていない手でパンを食べているのを見て、彼らは咎めた。
3.　それは、ファリサイ派の人々も、また、すべてのユダヤ人たちも、祖先達の伝統を守って、特別なやりかたで（両手をこぶしでこすって《ギリシャ語訳》）洗う ことなしには食べないからである。
4.　また、彼らは市場から来たときには、彼らは洗わなければ（身を沈めなければ 《ギ》）食べない。また、もろもろのカップ、水差し、青銅の器、ベッド、を漬けて清める 事のように、彼らはその他多くの守るべき事を受け継いでいた。
5.　その時、ファリサイ派の人々や律法学者たちは、彼に尋ねた。「どうして、あなたの弟子達は先祖達の伝統に従って歩まないで、両手を洗わないでパンを食べているのか？」
6.　すると彼は彼らに答えて仰せになった。「エサイヤは汝ら偽善者たちのことをうまく預言したものだ。こう書いてある。『この民衆は、口では私をほめたたえている。しかし、彼らの心は私から遠く離れている。
7.　そして、彼らが私を礼拝しているのは虚しい。人間たちのもろもろの戒めを、教義として教えているからだ。』
8.汝らは天の神の命令を棚上げしてしまって、水差しや杯を洗う ような、これらの人間の伝統を守っている。そのうえ、汝らは他にも、同じような事をたくさんしている。」
9.　彼は彼らに仰せになった。汝らは、よくも自分たちの伝統を守るために天の神の掟をはねつけたものだ。
10.　モーセは言ったではないか。『あなたの父と母とを敬慕せよ。』また、『父と母とに悪口を言う者には死をもって、（その人生を）終わらせよ。』と。
11.　しかし、汝らは言っている。『もし、ある人が、彼の父と母とに、「私からあなたが受けられる物がどんなに役に立つものであっても、これはコルバン・・捧げ物です」と言えば、
12.　もはや、彼は父親にも、母親にも何もしなくても良い』と。
13.　汝らは言い伝えて来た伝統によって、天の神の御言葉を効力の無いものにしてしまっている。また、汝らは、これと同じような事をたくさんしているのだ。」
14.　そして、彼の所に、全ての群集を呼び集めて、彼らに仰せになった。「皆、私の言うことを聞きなさい。そして、理解しなさい。
15.　人間の体の外側から彼に入ってくる物で彼を汚すことのできるものはない。かえって、彼から出て来るもろもろのものこそが、人を汚しているのだ。
16.　だれでも、 聞く耳のある者は聞くがよい〕」。

17.　彼が群集から去って家にお入りになった時、彼の弟子達が彼に、そのたとえについて尋ねた。
18.　そこで、彼は彼らに仰せになった。「汝らも同じようにわかっていないのか？人間の外から入ってくる物が彼を汚す事などできないことがわからないのか？
19.　それは彼の心に入るのではなく、腹に入り、そして排泄されてしまうからだ。このように、すべての食べ物は清められている〔ことが分からないのか〕？」
20.　また、彼は仰せになった。「人から出てくるもの、それが人を汚すのだ。
21.　それは内側から、人々の心から、もろもろの邪悪な考え、不倫、姦淫、殺人、
22.　窃盗、強欲、悪意、悪巧み、卑猥、悪意のこもった目、悪口、誇り、愚かさが出てくる。
23.　全ての邪悪なものは、内側から出て来る。そして、人を汚している。」
24.　彼はそこから立ち上がって、ツロとシドーンの境の方まで行かれた。そして、一軒の家にお入りになったが、彼はだれにも知られる事を望まれなかった。しかし、彼は隠れている事は出来なかった。
25.　というのは、自分の幼い娘が汚れた霊に憑かれている、一人の婦人が彼のことを聞きつけたのである。そして彼女は来て、彼の足元にひれ伏した。
26.　その婦人はギリシャ人で、スロ・フェニキヤの生まれであった。そして、彼女は、彼女の娘から悪霊を投げ出して下さるようにと、彼に願い続けた。
27.　しかし、主イエスは彼女に仰せになった。「まず、子供たちを満腹させなければ。子供たちから食べ物を取って、犬たちに投げてやるのは良くないから。」
28.　すると、彼女は彼に答えて言った。「そうです、主よ。でも、子犬たちでも、机の下にある、子供たちのこぼした分くらいはいただきます。」
29.　すると、彼は彼女に仰せになった。「よくぞ言った 。行きなさい。悪霊は、汝の娘から出てしまっている。」

30.　そこで、彼女が家に行ってみると、悪霊は出て行ってしまったのが分かった。そして彼女の娘はベッドの上に寝ていた。
31.　彼はもう一度ツロとシドーンの地方から出発して、デカポリスの中を通って、ガリラヤの海の方にお出でになった。
32.　その時、彼らは一人の耳が聞こえず、話す事も出来ない人を彼の所に連れてきた。そして、彼に手を置いていただくように請うた。
33.　そこで、彼を群集から離れたところに連れて行かれた。そして彼の指を彼の両耳に入れ、また、唾をはいて、彼の舌に触れられた。
34.　それから、天を見上げ、彼はため息をつき、そして、彼に仰せになった。「エファサ」それは、「開かれよ」ということである。
35.　ただちに彼は聞こえるようになった。また、彼の舌も障害が解けた。そしてはっきりと話せるようになった。
36.　その時、彼は彼らにだれにも言わないようにとお命じになった。しかし、彼が彼らに命じられるほどに、彼らはますますそのことをいい広めたのである。
37.　そして、彼らは全く驚かされて、こう言った。「彼のなさった事は皆すばらしい。（彼は）聞こえない耳を聞こえるようにし、また、きけない口をしゃべれるようになさるのだ。」

Defilement Comes from Within
7 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.
2 Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.
 3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.
 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
7 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men —the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”
9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;[d] and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’
11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God),
 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,
 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
14 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:
 15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.
16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
17 When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,
19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”
20 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.
 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
A Gentile Shows Her Faith
24 From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.
 25 For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”
28 And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”
30 And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.
Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute
31 Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee.
32 Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him.
33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.
34 Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.
 36 Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it.
37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

１５章

2.　その時、ピラトは彼に問うた。「お前はユダヤ人たちの王か？」彼は彼に答えて仰せになった。「汝の言うとおりである。」
3.　すると、祭司の長たちは彼を多くの事で告発した。しかし、彼は何もお答えにならなかった。
4.　その時、ピラトは、また彼に問うて言った。「お前は何も答えないのか？見よ、彼らはこんなに多くのことでお前に不利な証言をしている。」
5.　しかし、イエスはなおも何もお答えにならなかった。そこで、ピラトは驚嘆してしまった。
6.　さて、かの祭りの時、彼は彼らにだれでも彼らが要求する囚人を一人釈放するのを習慣としていた。

Jesus Faces Pilate
15 Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.
2 Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
3 And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.
 4 Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”
5 But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.
6 Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.
7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.
8 Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.
 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
13 So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.
17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,
18 and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.
20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.
The King on a Cross
21 Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.
 22 And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
 23 Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
24 And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
25 Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
 26 And the inscription of His accusation was written above:
27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.
28 So the Scripture was fulfilled[c] which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”
29 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,
 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”
31 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.
 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”
Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.
Jesus Dies on the Cross
33 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”
36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”
37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.
38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”
40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,
41 who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb
42 Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.
45 So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
46 Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.

1.　さて、彼はまた海辺で教え始められた。すると、彼の所に大群衆が寄り集まってきた。そこで彼は小船に乗り込み、海の上で腰をお掛けになった。そこで群衆はみな、海に面した地にいた。
2.　それから、彼はもろもろのたと

え話を使って多くのことを彼等に教えになったが、彼等にその教えのうちに、こう仰せになった。
3.「聞きなさい。見よ、ある種まきが種蒔きに出て行った。
4.　さて、彼が種蒔きをしていると、ある種は、道ばたにおちた。

すると、空の鳥たちがやって来て、その種を食べてしまった。
5.　他は、石地に落ちた。そこは、土が多くはなかった。そして、すぐに芽が出てきた。浅地だったからだ。
6.　しかし、太陽が昇ると、それは焼けてしまった。根無しのためにそれは枯れたのだ。
7.　また、幾つかの種は棘科の草の間に落ちた。そして棘の草が育ってきてそれをふさいだ。それで、それは何も収穫がなかった。
8.　さて、他の種で、良い地に落ちたものは育って収穫があがった。それは、増えて、あるものは三十を、あるものは六十を、そしてあるものは百の実を結んだ。」
9.　そして彼らに仰せになった。「聞く耳を持っている人は聞きなさい！」

10.　さて、彼がお一人の時に、かの十二人と一緒にいた人たちが、彼にそのたとえ話について尋ねた。
11.　すると、彼らに仰せになった。「汝らには、天の神の王国の秘密について知る事が許されている。しかし、他の人々には、すべてがたとえの形でなされる。
12.　というのは、彼らは見るには見ているかもしれないが、気づかない。また、彼らは聞くには聞いているが、悟らない。それは、彼らが立ち返ることのないため、また、彼らのもろもろの罪が赦されないためだ。」
13.　そして、（彼は）彼らに仰せになった。「汝らは、このたとえがわかっていないのか？それなら、どうして汝らは、このたとえを全部理解するだろうか？
14.種を蒔く者は、御言葉を蒔いている。
15.　そして、御言葉が蒔かれたのが道ばたであった人とはこういう人のことだ。彼らが聞いているとき、すぐにかのサタンがやって来て、彼らの心に蒔かれた御言葉を取り除いていく。
16.　また、同じように、石地に蒔かれた人々はこういう人のことだ。彼らは、御言葉を聞いた時には、喜んですぐにそれを受け入れる。
17.　しかし、彼らは自分の（彼ら自身の）中に根がない。それだから、ほんの一時しか忍耐していない。後になってその御言葉のために、艱難や迫害が起きると、彼らはすぐにつまずく。
18.　また、棘科の草むらの中に蒔かれた人々というのは、こういう人のことだ。彼らは御言葉を聞いている。
19.　しかし、この世のもろもろの心配と、もろもろの富のごまかしと、その他のもろもろの物質的な願望が入ってきて、御言葉による成長を止める。そして、実を結ばない。
20.　しかし、良い土地の上に蒔かれた人々は、御言葉を聞いて受け入れている人たちのことだ。そして、一つは三十を、また、一つは六十を、一つは百の実を結んでいる人のことだ。」
21.　また、彼は彼らに仰せになった。「明かりは、升の下や、ベッドの下に置くべきだろうか？それは燭台の上に置くべきではないのか？
22.なぜなら、　漏らされない隠し事などは何もないし、明らかにならずに、隠されたままの秘密もないからだ。
23.　だれでも、聞く耳があるなら、その人は聞きなさい。」
24.　それから、彼はその人々（彼ら）に仰せになった。「汝らが聞いていることに注意しなさい。汝らたが使っている、その同じ量りが、汝らを量るようになる。そして、聞いているならば、もっと与えられる。

25.　だれでも、持っている人は、さらに与えられる。しかし、だれでも、持っていない人は、持っているものでさえも、彼から取り去られるからだ。」
26.　また、彼は仰せになった。「天の神の王国は、ちょうど、ある人が地に種を蒔くようなものだ。
27.　そして、夜寝ている時、また昼起きている時にも、その種は芽が出て成長していく。自分でも（彼自身）どうしてなのか〔そうなるのか〕は知らない。
28.　土地は自然に穀物を産するからだ。最初に葉、それから穂、その後で穂に実が一杯になる。
29.　そして、穀物が熟すると、彼はすぐに鎌を入れる。収穫の時が来たからだ。」
30.　それから彼は仰せになった。「天の神の王国を、私たちは何に似せてみようか？また、どんな譬えで私たちはそれをイメージ（描くことに）しようか？
31.　それは、からしの種に似ている。それがこの地にまかれる時には、地上のすべての種よりも小さい。
32.　しかし、それがまかれると、成長してあらゆる草よりも大きくなる。そしてもろもろの大きな枝が出てくる。それで、天のもろもろの鳥がその陰に巣を作る。」
33.　そして、彼らが聞けるようにと、彼は、そのように多くのたとえを使って彼らに御言葉をお語りになった。
34.　しかし、彼のは彼らに対して、譬えを使わないではお語りにならなかった。そして、彼らだけになった時、彼はご自分の（彼の）弟子たちにすべてのことについて説明された。
35.　その日、夕方になった時、彼は彼らに仰せになった。「さあ、向こう岸に渡って行こう。」
36.　さて、彼らが群衆を残して出発した時、彼らはいつものように、彼を小舟の中にお乗せした。また、他の小舟たちも彼と一緒であった。
37.　すると、ひどい暴風が起こった。そして、波がなんども舟の中に打ち込んできたので、その舟はすでに〔水で〕一杯になっていた。
38.　しかし、彼は船尾の方で、まくらをして眠っておられた。そこで彼らは彼を起して、彼に言った。「先生、私たちが死にかかっているのに、気にかけられないんですか？」
39.　その時、彼は起き上がって風をお叱りになった。また、海に向かっても仰せになった。「静まれ。黙れ！」そして、風はやみ、そこには、完全な静けさがあった。
40.　しかし、彼は彼らに仰せになった。「どうして汝らは、そう恐れるのだ？いったい、汝らには信仰がないのか？」
41.　そこで、彼らは非常に恐れた。そして、互いに言い合った。「だれにこんなことができるのか。風や海でさえもこの方に従うなんて！」

The Parable of the Sower
4 And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea.
2 Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching:
3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.
4 And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it.
5 Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth.
 6 But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away.
 7 And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.
8 But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
9 And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
The Purpose of Parables
10 But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.
 11 And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables,
 12 so that‘Seeing they may see and not perceive,
And hearing they may hear and not understand;
Lest they should turn,
And their sins be forgiven them.’”
The Parable of the Sower Explained
13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?
 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
 17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.
 18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word,
19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
Light Under a Basket
21 Also He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand?
22 For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.
23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
24 Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.
25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground,
27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.
28 For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.
29 But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 Then He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it?
 31 It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth;
 32 but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”
Jesus’ Use of Parables
33 And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.
 34 But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.
Wind and Wave Obey Jesus
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”
36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
